Oldgame VM documentation

Guide Library

Setup notes for running legally owned Windows games through Oldgame VM on macOS.

Overview

Oldgame VM organizes game profiles, runtime choices, controller settings, and launch diagnostics in one macOS interface. These guides explain the supported workflow without promising compatibility that has not been verified.

Before you begin

You must provide your own legally purchased game files. Oldgame VM does not include games, Windows licenses, installers, or proprietary runtimes.

Getting started

Import a legally owned game

  1. Install or locate your game from your own GOG, Steam, or other legal purchase.
  2. Select the game executable or folder in Oldgame VM.
  3. For supported GOG installers, choose the setup_*.exe file. The launcher extracts files instead of launching the installer as a game.
  4. Save the profile, then check the runtime and launch settings.

Runtime

Apple Silicon and Rosetta 2

Oldgame VM checks for the x86_64 translation layer needed by its bundled runtime on Apple Silicon and prompts for setup when required. A healthy process probe confirms startup only; a live process does not prove playable rendering, audio, save/load, or clean exit.

Choose a title

Jagged Alliance 2Profile and display setup

Use your own installation. Review executable, working directory, renderer, and controller options. Wildfire is unsupported on free Wine; CrossOver remains detect-only and is not bundled. Full audio, save/load, and clean-exit verification remains open.

Stronghold Crusader HDGetting the classic display right

Start with a clean user-owned install and test the profile at your target resolution. Record display and input results in the project compatibility notes.

Mega Man X8 (16-bit)Controller-first setup

Connect your supported Xbox or PlayStation controller before testing. Save the profile after mapping inputs, then record title-specific behavior.
